Wednesday Appointment

Hi all,
Sorry it's been awhile since I've written, it's been busy. Tomorrow Caleb has a burn Dr appointment in Lincoln. Todd & I will be picking him up at Bennington (where he is staying) & taking him to Lincoln for the appointment. They will be checking the Integra. It looked really good last week & they are hoping to put a skingraft over it after 21 days. It had a good blood supply and was nice & pink.

I will update you as soon as I can. But it is the New Year holiday, so I'll do my best. Thank you to all the people who have commented on the Daily News article on Caleb. We are praying that God continues to use it to bring Glory to himself & we are mere vessels!!

Love, Tami

Home for the Holidays

As I write this, Caleb is visiting with a cousin Darrin Kraft. They have been very close growing up & I am glad they are getting some time together.

I had a wonderful Christmas having Caleb here. We were able to go to a Christmas Eve service with other family members & it was very moving. Just being with other believers & sharing in God's love towards us was a cool experience.

Caleb spent Christmas day with his dad & family & then stayed over at his dad's house all day on Friday also & came to our house again today. He plans to go back to his dad's later as his is planning to go to church with them. Then it will be back to Bennington for rehab on Monday.

Wednesday he will go back to the burn Dr to have his Integra looked at. After approx. 21 days they will do a skingraft on that leg. So far it looks really good. Todd & I got to see it when we took him to his last appointment. It has been filling in very nicely. The Integra will provide a "base " for the skingraft & padding for his prosthetic.

Please continue to pray for his left hand. We are asking God to increase the mobility there. Thank You for all your prayers & support. We really appreciate each & everyone of you!! Love, Tami

Felt much better

By the time Caleb went to the Dr. he was feeling much better. Thank you Lord. I guess Moms still "fret" when their kids are ill, even when they are 20!!!!

Have a Merry Christmas!!!

12/22/08 Update

As I write this, things are VERY chaotic at work. So it's taken me a while to get to posting on the blog. Levi is out at the house with Caleb & he said that Caleb is not feeling too well. I've cancelled his dental appointment for this afternoon & he had an appointment with the Dr already scheduled for today at 3:50. I'm sure the timing is good. Hopefully he's not coming down with something.

Tonight he will go to Kristin & Jim's for his rehab appointment for tomorrow. Grandpa Bob is taking him, THANKS!!! Then on Wed, Todd & I will pick him up at Kristin's & take him to Omaha for his appointment with his burn Dr. Then we will go to Rani's for Christmas.

I don't think I'll be writing much between now & then, so bare with me. I will try to update tomorrow after he goes to the Dr. today. Otherwise, I'm gonna try to just enjoy Christmas with the Fam.........

Have a VERY Merry Christmas!! Love, Tami

Update!

I know that Caleb has been getting in touch with friends as a few of you have come out to the house to visit & he got snowed in town last night with friends. On the way home from Lincoln he asked "Do I have a curfew?"

He was able to pull off a surprise being home with his brother & dad the first night he was here. He enjoyed that!

He will begin assessments at QLI in Omaha on Tuesday & then start therapy on Monday the 29th. He has to go back to the burn surgeon on Wednesday the 24th to have him look at his leg. In 3-4 weeks they expect to do a skin graft on that leg & then let it heal & get his prosthetic. We are continuing to pray for that leg & left hand. It still can't grip.

Sometimes I am in such awe that we have been Blessed enough to 1) have him alive & 2) have him for Thanksgiving in NE & 3) HOME for Christmas!! God has so richly poured out Grace on our family. When He promised to never leave us nor forsake us, I am so grateful!! You never know how you will respond when something like this happens to you or your loved one, but God has carried us through! THANK YOU Lord!! For everything!!!

HOME!!!

Well, when Caleb's Dr came out to talk to us after surgery, he said "You can take him home!"

PRAISE GOD!!!

We went back to Madonna, packed up his room & stopped at the mall for a quick stop & CAME HOME!

I still can hardly believe he is here!!! So, if you are in Norfolk, Caleb will be here until either Sunday or Monday & then he will go to Jim & Kristin's to begin rehab. He might be here again the following weekend for the New Year, but HE IS HOME!!!!!

Thank you for all of your prayers!! Love, Tami

GREAT weekend!!

It's been a busy & GREAT weekend! Caleb got to get together with several of his friends & his little brother & hang out for the weekend. I was glad for him to get out of the hospital and hang out with friends. Unfortunately, he didn't give me many details to share with you. He is expecting his friend Eric tonight to hang out. Eric has been out of the country & unable to connect with Caleb in person. I know he is looking forward to seeing Eric.

Caleb went for a home visit today to his Aunt Kristin & Uncle Jim's house. The plan is to live with them while he is in OUT Patient rehab. They live in Bennington & have opened their home to him. We are so grateful to them & all they are doing. We will never be able to thank them enough!! They were able to go through the house with Caleb & determine what might need done. For example: hand rails in the bath tub. That sort of thing.

Caleb is so hoping & praying to be able to be discharged before Christmas. We are praying that God has His healing hand on the left leg & that it heals well enough to be home for the Holidays.

The next step in the recovery process is a skin graft on Wednesday. Todd & I are planning to go down there & of course, the weather is now calling for 4-6 inches of snow...RRRR...I normally love the snow & it's not that I don't, but it sure seems like we get the "fun" weather when we are suppose to go to Lincoln.

I don't have a lot more to add. But I am always in awe at how God has moved in our lives. We watched a show last night that made me think again of how close we came to spending our first Holidays without Caleb all together! Life is so fragile. I don't think we tell people that we love how much we love them nearly enough. Thank you all for your prayers & I am praying that everyone ready this has a most Blessed Christmas!!

WOW!!

Caleb, thank you so much for posting on the blog. I think the pictures are marvelous!! You look GREAT, by the way! I am so proud of you & how you have leaned on God so well since Sept 20.

Caleb is asking for continued prayer concerning his left hand. He is still unable to make a fist with it. All the signs have been good, but there is no way to really tell what nerves may have been damaged. TIME will tell. This makes holding the crutches a bit challenging.

The left shoulder is stretching & moving well. He is pretty sure that he may not need surgery to relieve that skin graft. He also has good elbow movement. The right leg is GREAT! The chin is GREAT!

The left leg is still needing a skin graft & we are praying that it heals really well to be home in time for Christmas. As Caleb said, it is in the Lord's hands whether he is out or not.

God has been so good these last 3 months. Not that He isn't good all the time, but I know that He carried us through. I don't know how we would have made it without Him. I am praying that He has used this situation to strengthen your faith as He has ours.

Have a GREAT weekend!! Caleb is expecting to hang out with the guys this weekend & Todd & I are doing MUCH needed housework this weekend!!! Love, Tami

PS Laura Katherine, I am still praying for your father!!

Short Surgery

Well, Caleb is out of surgery. The Allograft had taken about 75%, which meant that there was bacteria there & the Integra (an artificial graft) would not have taken, so they did another Allograft. The Dr said that could end up being done 3-4 times. We are just sitting in his room now while he is waking up. They've left the splint on. Caleb feels like he is able to flex that leg a little straighter, so it appears to be helping.

God has been so good to us through the last 2 months & I want to take a moment to Thank Him. Please pray for the Grace to continue through this. We love you all. Love, Tami

Wow! Quick weekend!

Well, to start off, I apologize for slacking over the weekend! We walked into Caleb's room on Sunday to have him tell us that the Dr said he could have a pass for the afternoon and boy, was he ready to get out!! So Rani & Kevin came over from Omaha & we loaded up & took him to Valentino's and then to the mall. We didn't even purchase anything, it was just good for him to get out!!

Then we came back to Madonna & visited with Brendee, Shellee & Tyler. A friend Logan & girlfriend stopped over before we left too. From what Caleb said he had lots of visitors on Saturday. Mainly Levi & dad & family.

Caleb is really wanting to get out before Christmas, but we'll have to wait & see.

Tomorrow he is to go back to St. Elizabeth's for them to look at the left leg. They will make a decision on what type of graft they will do when he is in surgery. So Todd & I will go down either tonight or tomorrow weather depending.

Caleb's goal is to get back to Madonna on Tuesday afternoon & get up on his new prosthetic on the parallel bars. I really hope he gets to do that while we are there. I will take lots of pictures!!

Well, work is now in full swing & I gotta go! Have a GREAT day!! And always remember that God loves you more than you will ever understand!!!

Oh it's good to hear from Caleb!!

Caleb, You are so welcome!! I love you very much 2 !!!!

Thank you for posting on your blog!! I went to add to it this morning & you gave a much better update than I could have. (At least more thorough) THANK YOU!!! I'm sure that people are glad to hear about your Road to Recovery from you.........and of course the picture helps 2.......

It's been a usual Friday at the Middle School. Things get a little crazy by the end of the week.

If I learn anything new, I will post it, or maybe Caleb will give you an update later again......

Guess Who?

First of all, I want to thank my mother...she has remained strong for me and all of the readers of this blog through some of the toughest times of our lives. I love you mom!

Well today was a very important day on this road to recovery and an adequate independence for a return to school. I had my right residual limb casted for the first mold for creating a prosthetic! The third and it seems final phase of recovery has begun! That was in the morning, and this afternoon I went downstairs to their offices and their workshop. He had already finished the plaster mold of my stump. He told me that he has me labeled a k3 when it comes to prosthetics which means I'll be on legs that will allow me to do pretty much everything but run. After I get up on them and show that I can handle any surface, he will bump me up to a k4 which means if the insurance will cover them I'll get the running Ossur carbon fiber legs like the ones Oscar Pistorius has. I'm excited to get my first one sometime next week if things go as planned for them.

Thank you all for your continued support and prayers. I have learned through this how incredibly strong my support is. My family is stronger and closer than I had ever imagined and my friends have done the same. Please continue to seek the Lord and all that He has for us to learn through this process! I don't know how or why, but I know that this whole time and even injury has been worked into a good thing by our wonderful Savior.

LONG Day/Week

I just realized before I left work that I haven't posted anything. Caleb didn't have a lot to say earlier, so I have nothing new to report. Caleb if you read this, feel free to post something!! I've given you log in information!!! Anyway, it's been a long day & I am bushed!!! Love, Tami

Surgery went well

Surgery went well. It was really short compared to the other surgeries he's had. He was in his room before 11:30. The left knee still won't extend as well as it should, so they put it in a splint. We are just hanging out with Caleb in his room waiting for the Madonna van to come get him. We'll grab a bite to eat for the 3 of us & hang out with him a little longer. He's doing really well. Rani is suppose to come over from Omaha for a visit! There's really not a lot more to add, other than Thank You for all the prayers. Love, Tami

Thanks!

I would like to say Thanks to Zach &/or Charlie for posting the pictures for me. Doesn't he look GREAT!!! A little skinny, but he's doing his best to catch up. Charlie brought him some cereal to snack on & I know one night over the weekend he ate 4 bowls!! I am bringing some Marshmellow Maties with me when we go down for surgery!

Surgery #13 will be his Allograft. Please pray that it heals exceptionally well. I know he is getting ansy to get up on his prosthetics. They have delayed the caste of his right leg because of surgery, but hopefully soon I'll have pictures of him standing upright on his own accord!!

Due to the weather, snow suppose to be coming in, we are debating whether or not to go down tonight. Caleb has decided that he wants his own clothes, so we are bringing all of those with us.

Laura Katherine, I will continue to pray that your Dad is able to keep his knee!!!

Allograft for Wed.

I talked to Caleb this morning & he is suppose to go to St. Elizabeth's to have his Allograft surgery on Wed. at 10:30. He will be spending the night over there for sure. We are praying that he is able to return to Madonna the next day. Please pray that everything goes well.

I brought back pictures from the weekend to work & he's looking so good! I am awed at how God moves.........THANK YOU !!!!!!!

Love, Tami

Laura Katherine

I am so sorry to hear about your Dad. We will most definately keep him in our prayers. No matter how hard this is for you or him, if there's one thing I know, God doesn't leave us to go through these situations by ourselves. He loves you soooo much!!! Please take care & keep us posted on how your Dad is doing. Love, Tami

Another walk

Todd & I were able to take Caleb out for another walk on Saturday afternoon. It was chilly, but Caleb really likes getting out. Mr Hart stopped by right as we were leaving the building to go for our walk. Thanks. Tomorrow, Monday he will go to St E's to see the Dr & he will decide if Caleb's ready for an Allograft. If so & they are able to schedule it for Tuesday, they will. Todd & I will go down for the day on Tuesday if it happens.

Caleb is now taking an active role in his dressing changes. Actually, he takes all the dressing off. This helps him to control the pain. He has to do these twice a day & likes it MUCH better.

God has such good timing............we were getting ready to walk out the door to come home & his step sister Cassie texted him that they were coming over from Omaha. I know Charlie also visited on Saturday evening & Zach & parents were suppose to stop over. Today when I called, Great Gram Goodwater & Janice & Lloyd were over visiting. THANK YOU so much for visiting him when we are unable to be there. I do so appreciate this.

I also want to thank Pastor Matt for the message on Faith this morning! We need to be reminded to walk by faith............it's so easy to forget that!

Hebrews 11
1Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

What a fellowship, what a joy divine,Leaning on the everlasting arms; What a blessedness, what a peace is mine,Leaning on the everlasting arms.
Refrain
Leaning, leaning, safe and secure from all alarms;Leaning, leaning, leaning on the everlasting arms.
O how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way,Leaning on the everlasting arms;O how bright the path grows from day to day,Leaning on the everlasting arms.
Refrain
What have I to dread, what have I to fear,Leaning on the everlasting arms;I have blessed peace with my Lord so near,Leaning on the everlasting arms.
Refrain

Thank you all so much for the love & support you've given us!!

Long walk

Yesterday we were able to take Caleb for a long walk during half time. It was such a beautiful afternoon, no wind, nice temperatures, not a "normal" NE day. He really enjoyed getting out & we enjoyed the conversation with him. We also got to watch Iron Man with him. It actually wasn't too bad of a movie. It's so hard to find ones without tons of swear words, & naughty scenes........

How could I forget, we lit the Christmas tree that Todd & I brought to him. Caleb got to sleep in this morning until about 11:00.....who-hoo!!! Thanks Lori for coming on Sunday. I will tell Caleb to look for you all. I am thinking of you also & praying for you. If you need anything, please call.

We will go home later today to regroup for the next week. We have a motorcycle (Caleb's) to winterize & "stuff" to sort through, laundry, you know, the usual.............

Thank you all for the cards, thoughts, & prayers. God has been so good to us & we have felt His love surround us! Love, Tami

Sundays

Todd & I have just been hanging out with Caleb. We went to therapy this morning with him & to the cafeteria for lunch. We are planning to take a walk yet this afternoon. Caleb would like to get some outside time. We will be going back to Norfolk tomorrow late afternoon or early evening. So if anyone is free to come visit on Sunday, that would be great. Sundays appear to be a little more difficult as there are fewer visitors. Having visitors helps to keep his mind off of where he is, and sometimes the pains. Thanks Jason for coming last Sunday to visit.

Psalm 9:10 (King James Version)
10And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.

Oops, the game is on, gotta go! Love, Tami

Happy Thanksgiving

We want to wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving!!! We are going over to Murdock to celebrate together. I am so excited to have Caleb "home" for the holiday!!

He has a really cool picture of him standing on his knees during therapy. We will try to get it posted on the blog for all to see.

Caleb does have a very specific prayer request. He is concerned about his left hand. The arm overall works pretty good, but the left hand his having trouble. He is unable to make a fist. They are trying to find the right nerve to stimulate with electric impulses, but haven't gotten it to do that yet. He is concerned about this & would appreciate your prayers.

We thank you for everything you have all done for us and most of all we are Thankful to the Mighty God we serve! I am so Thankful my son is alive and with us during this holiday!!

Allograft

Caleb is scheduled to go to St Elizabeth's on Monday & see the burn Dr. He will decide if the left leg is ready to do an allograft. I got this info from the internet.

Allografts are tissues that are removed from one person and transplanted to another person. Allograft skin is used as a temporary burn cover, and will be rejected by the recipient within 21 days. However, until it is rejected, the allograft skin will provide many of the functions of healthy skin. Skin allografts will close a wound by providing a barrier against infection and fluid loss. They also reduce pain and promote the healing of underlying tissues. Skin allografts are used as a transitional treatment until autografting can permanently close the wound. Allograft skin is obtained from cadavers after consent is obtained from the next-of-kin. Tissue donors are carefully screened and tested for many transmissible diseases including hepatitis and AIDS.

If it's ready, he will have this done on Tuesday at St E's. He may stay a day or more, but we don't know for sure.

We are getting excited for Thanksgiving & being able to celebrate it with Caleb! Please continue to pray that his left arm nerves will wake up & that the left leg continues to heal well.

We have so much to be thankful for...............

Wound Vac off

Caleb called me at 2:45 or so & said they took the wound vac off & are not planning to put it back on. This has been painful for him. Please pray the God would lessen the pain for him. Monday Dr Voight (sp) is suppose to look at the wound on Monday & put something on it to see if it grows & if it does then it is ready for a skin graft. I don't know much else & it's busy at work. Love, Tami

Wii

I just got off the phone with Caleb. He got to play Wii for recreational therapy today. He thought that was pretty cool. He also got to hang out with his dad and brother for the day. He really didn't have a lot more to say, so this is going to be a short update. Thank you again for all your thoughts & prayers!!! Love, Tami

Late

Sorry this is late. It's been a busy day on my part. Caleb had an opposite day. He said he was kinda cranky. Jason did come up to visit, but Caleb said he slept a lot, so he wasn't much for company. He was happy that he got to sleep in today. He did say that he was able to talk on the phone a lot. I'm not suppose to call him tomorrow until after 3:00, so I'm sure tomorrow will be a little later posting too.

I am getting exicited for Thanksgiving. I can't remember if I told people Caleb has a 4 hour pass so we are getting together with family in Murdock. I look forward to having him there for the Thanksgiving prayer!!!

Well, it's late & I have to get ready for work, so I'll close for now. We thank everyone in Vanderbilt for the wonderful care that was given to Caleb & Liz, he just about cried when he got the gift. Please keep in touch!!!

Love, Tami

Weekend

So far it's been a "lazy" Saturday for Caleb. He ate 4 pancakes, took a shower & is now having OT. They really work on the burns & massaging them & stretch them. He'll have that every day while he is here. He was told this morning that the Huskers are coming over next week to visit, so he's excited about that. Not sure how many visitors he will have today. Rani (sis) is on her way over from Omaha, and I think Aunt Brenda & Sue are coming too.

Todd & I are heading back home this early evening to regroup & get ready to go to work & go to church. It's looking to be a busy week. I will be trying to go visit my mom, clean the house, put up Christmas decorations, and cook for Thanksgiving. We will be back down for the Holiday weekend and when we know what Caleb's next surgery schedule will be, we will figure out from there. He will be having a skin graft on the left leg next, I think. We haven't been told how far into the future that may be.

Sunne, we will make contact with you to get Kiwi. (Kiwi is our Quaker Parrot.)

We are thankful that he is here. They have been doing such good burn care. I will do my best to keep up the blog in the next week, but please forgive me, if I get a little busy this next week. I am so Thankful for Thanksgiving this year. We should be thankful every day, but this year will be a little special. Have a GREAT day!!! Love, Tami

Mixed up Appointment schedule

This morning Caleb was suppose to go to St Elizabeth for an appointment with a surgeon to look at his left leg. We got there and there was miscommunication & there was no appointment. So we came back to Madonna where Caleb gets to go into the cafeteria & pick out his own meal. THAT was cool! He ate really well. Suzi (my sister) & her kids came to visit. Caleb had OT & PT. He has that for 2 hours in the morning & 2 hours in the afternoon. He is getting around so well. He has a wheelchair that he propels everywhere. He has a pair of gloves that help him grip the wheels.

He should get his left leg looked at by a Dr on Tuesday, and then hopefully we'll get an idea when they think they will be doing his skin graft. Today we talked to the social worker & we are looking at Caleb being here at Madonna for appr. 6 weeks. Then out patient. We are looking at him going to Immanuel Hospital in Omaha for out patient rehab & staying with Aunt Kristen & Uncle Jim.

It has been so good for him to be here. They are really getting him going on rehab!! They take very good care of his burns & are pushing him to do a little more each day. We are thankful that Caleb is doing so well.

Please keep praying for the rehab on his left arm/hand. We've had some positive input on what they think, but it is still has a ways to go. They are really concentrating in therapy on waking up those nerves.

Thank you so much for all of your prayers & support!! Love, Tami

Busy day!

It's been a busy day. Caleb had his first day of physical & occupational therapy. It's two hours in the morning & 2 hours in the afternoon. He was able to propel himself with his wheel chair from the other end of the building to his room. Next week they will begin electrical stimulation on his left hand. It's been extremely busy here so I will let you go..........Love, Tami

Visiting Hours

Visiting Hours are 6 am to 10 pm. (I'm pretty sure) They may put more restrictions on that if it gets to be too many visitors at one time, but I don't think most people there have that problem. So, I would suggest that you give Caleb a call & see if he knows if he will have very many people coming on whatever day you are thinking of coming down. He does love visitors though, especially after not getting to see people for so long. Love, Tami

Assessments Begin

Caleb is starting "over" & will go through the range of assessments today. They need to find out what he can do, what he can't do, where they want him to be & what he needs to do to get there.

Todd & I are at home "regrouping" to go back to Lincoln. He stopped in at Lincoln this morning at 7:00ish, talked to Caleb a little & then we headed home to unload Caleb's stuff from college & motorcycle, do some laundry, Todd to sleep a little, take care of mail & banking & all that "fun" stuff!! We will be heading back to Lincoln tomorrow. Caleb's dad & family & Uncle Scott & family will be going to visit today.

I will know more after I get ahold of Caleb. He did not answer his phone when I called, so I will try again later! Thank you again for all the support so MANY people have given this family. Caleb has been overwhelmed by your love. Even more so now as the "fog" has lifted. Thank you!!!

Love, Tami

Plane Ride

We are 18,000 feet in the air, on Vanderbilt’s airplane, heading to NE. At the very last minute they said that Caleb could have a passenger fly with him. Todd & I tried to adjust our plans in just a couple of minutes. It was not easy for him, but we knew I had to come with Caleb. I feel bad that the entire load was dumped on him for getting all of Caleb’s stuff at Lee & driving to NE alone. Please pray that God gives him an extra dose of Grace through this.
I am thankful that I am able to ride with my son to his new destination. God has been so good!! I’ll never be able to truly express the Grace & Love that he has poured out to us so generously. From saving Caleb’s life, to having him home for Thanksgiving, from giving me an amazing husband, to allowing me to be with Caleb during transport, and there are soooo many that it would be impossible for me to list them all.
Thank you all for your comments, prayers and encouragement. I do not know how people get through this life if they do not know the Lord. I know that He is knocking at someone’s heart who may be reading this. I challenge you to ask Him to show Himself to you. He will never let you down.
Love, Tami

Larry

Actually Larry, Caleb's step dad Todd knows your dad. And I think his dad (Marc) knows your dad as well. Both of them work for Nucor. One at the mill & one at Cold Finish. We have thought of your brother as we were hearing the news & have offered up prayers on his behalf. We look forward to meeting you at Madonna also. Tami

Last morning in TN

Please continue to pray for Caleb. The methadone fog has lifted & he is in much more pain. The emotional pain has "hit" Caleb & his heart is heavy. We talked & cried last night. Sometimes for what is unknown & scary, and sometimes for physical pain. He enjoyed the phone calls last night as we needed to go back to the apartment a little early to load up. We will be in NE sometime tomorrow. Grandpa, Rani & Levi will be in Lincoln today to be with him. We thank you for all the prayers for both of our journeys. Love, Tami

Last Full Day in TN!!

Well, today is Caleb's last full day in TN. It is a bittersweet Blessing. He has met such awesome people here at Vanderbilt. The care he has received is excellent. We hope you will keep in touch. We will never forget all that you've done for Caleb & taking such good care of him.

We have not gotten the final word as to flight time tomorrow. The physical/occupational therapy guy is going to come discuss range of motion and such sometime today. And we should be getting word of flight time sometime today also.

After Caleb is headed to NE Todd & I will go to Cleveland and load up his stuff & then head to Lincoln. I think Rani & Grandpa are the welcoming committee at Lincoln.

It will be so good to get him to NE. Thank you all so much for all your thoughts, prayers & support! A semi-new phase begins for Caleb & I am still clinging to the song by John Waller "While I'm waiting". We are not close to being done with this journey, but at least we'll be in good 'ole NE!!!! Please continue to pray for his left knee. It will still need skin grafting & there is the possibility that the muscles they've placed there do not do as well as he needs them to be.

Love, Tami

Adjusting

The last couple of days Caleb has had to adjust to no methadone. It has made the general overall uncomfortableness more intense. They are letting him have other pain medications, but his pressure ulcer on his backside is giving him more trouble. We've been trying to keep him on his side to relieve the pressure as much as possible. Please pray that God would just put His hand on Caleb's backside & help the ulcer heal.

This morning Paul & Darlia Conn (The President of Lee University & his wife) came to visit Caleb. He told Caleb if he wants to come back to Lee next fall, he will make it happen. He will also check into online classes for Caleb if he would be so inclined to take a few in January. To feel the genuine love from these two people was such a Blessing.

We will never be able to truly express our gratitude to Lee University. Everyone there has been so incredible. THANK YOU!!

Sometimes I am such in such awe of all that God is doing & has been doing in our lives since Sept 20. He has taken such amazing care of my son!! I know he has a long road ahead of him, but I know he will face the future with God's love & courage guiding him.

Thank You also to all the people at Vandy who have taken such good care of Caleb. I hope we will be able to maintain contact with you all over the years, but please know that we will forever be grateful to you all!!

Love, Tami

Quiet Day

It's been a quiet day. Caleb had a friend visiting and we went to the cafeteria. Otherwise, not much has gone on. He sure looks so good. He has no bandages on except a wound vac on his left leg. The chin looks WONDERFUL!!

He had visitors from Lee last night. And will have a few more visitors in the next couple of days. I don't have a lot to add. We are excited to get him home on Tuesday!!!

Thank you for all your support & prayers!!

Madonna Address

Here is Caleb's address in Lincoln, NE

Caleb Baber
c/o Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital
5401 South Str.
Lincoln, NE 68506

We don't have a room number yet, but I will pass it along as soon as I get it!!

Questions

Iwill attempt to answer some of the questions. Caleb's left leg has a wound vac. on it & he is awaiting a skin graft on that leg. Rather than to stay here & wait to have it done, Dr. Summitt has decided that he can go to Lincoln & begin therapy on the other leg & shoulder, then when the leg is ready for the graft, that can be done in NE. The left leg is looking good & the Dr is very optomistic that he will be able to keep it at the same length as the right.

I don't have an address yet for him, as soon as I get it, I will pass that information along. But on Tuesday (we think morning) he will be escorted by a burn team to the airport, on the plane, and all the way to NE. When he has actually left here, Todd & I will go to Cleveland & get his stuff & then head back to NE.

I need to go though, I need to make some phone calls solidifying plans on our end. I'll write more later.....

TUESDAY!!!!

I just found out a little bit ago that Caleb will be flying to Lincoln, NE on Tuesday!!!! God is soooo good!! I just can't believe that it's happening!! And a week before Thanksgiving!!!

Soooo, if you are at Lee & want to visit Caleb, he will be in Nashville until Tuesday. Todd & I are heading out at 3:00am & should arrive there between 5-6pm. We will decide after we get there what day we are coming to Lee to get his stuff.

THANK YOU!! Lord!!!
Love,
Tami

BC/BS will cover

I've gotten word that BC/BS will cover a plane ride for Caleb to come home. That translates to 67% of the price. We do not know how much that will be at this time. The case manager is checking into that for us.

We are asking for prayer for the entire situation. We know that God is in control of each little detail & every contingency that arises. And I'm just plain gettin' excited to see Caleb again!!!

Love,
Tami

Good morning!

I've talked to the case manager & we are still waiting on BC/BS and then what Dr. Summitt thinks Caleb's needs will be to get to NE. There is a possiblity that Caleb would go to Rehab while he is awaiting his last skin graft. There are so many contingencies that it is easy for me to get a little overwhelmed, so I am trying to take One Day at a Time, and sometimes One Minute......I am cautiously optomistic about getting Caleb home next week, but we still need to continue to bathe this in prayer.

Psalm 37:4-5
4Delight thyself also in the LORD: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.
5Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.

Andrea, Caleb is hoping to get to see Danny too!!! Tell him to stop on over!!!

Kyle, thank you for the information on ground transportation. I did mention this to the case manager. He thinks that Caleb will not be able to handle that long in transportation, but he will check with the Dr. We will let you know if they think it's something that he can do.

Thank you all for your prayers!!

Extreme Joy & Hope!!

I am weeping as I write this. I talked to Caleb about 45 minutes ago & Dr. Summitt said it is POSSIBLE that we might be able to get Caleb to NE next week!!!!

PLEASE keep that left leg in prayer. He would go to Omaha first if he's released next week, there he would have his skin grafting done on his left leg rather than waiting in TN for it to heal enough to do that.

I've put in phone calls to his case manager & BC/BS insurance. I am waiting to hear from them so that we can be ready if Caleb is ready.

I KNOW God is hearing these prayers & I thank you from the bottom of my heart for keeping my son in your prayers!!!

Love, Tami

Surgery today....

I just got off the phone with Caleb & he said he is going into surgery today instead of Wed or Thurs. They are suppose to put the wound vac on his left leg & he wasn't sure if it was debridement or doing a fold?? He said his left left was causing him some pain, so please pray about that. I will try to call him later this afternoon.

Please continue to pray that his leg heals exceptionally well. It is key to getting him home.

Thank you again for all that people have done for us & on our behalf. The love we've felt is extraordinary!!!

Keep Praying!!

I just got off the phone with Todd. He said when he called, Caleb was in Hydro & he spoke with Grandpa Bob. Caleb's leg is looking GREAT!! Let's keep praying that it heals exceptionally well & we can have that kid in NE for Thanksgiving!!!

Hooked Up to Nothing !!

Caleb told me this morning when we talked that he is hooked up to nothing. He has a drain in his chin, and his ostomy, but that's all. I told him he can escape easier that way......

He sounds really good in the mornings, so that's usually our longest conversation of the day. I couldn't understand last night if he was not able to get into his chair without the board or if he just didn't get to try yesterday.

One of my favorite verses in the Bible that has been sustaining me:
Isaiah 40:31
31But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

But oh my, that waiting is not easy sometimes!!

Tami

Renewed

Good Afternoon!
Todd & I were able to go to church this morning & be renewed. He is such a Mighty God!! A song that we sang this morning that really ministered to my heart was:
God will make a way
God will make a way
Where there seems to be no way
He works in ways we cannot see
He will make a way for me
He will be my guide
Hold me closely to His side
With love and strength for each new day
He will make a way
He will make a way
By a roadway in the wilderness
He'll lead me
And rivers in the desert will I see
Heaven and earth will fade
But His word will still remain
He will do something new today.

I am trusting that he will give all of us the strength we need as we travel this path He has placed us on. He has brought us so far already. He won't leave us there nor forsake us!!!

On a lighter note. When I talked to Caleb a little bit ago, he wanted me to tell you all that he is able to get out of his wheelchair & into bed without help!! Today he is going to be trying to get into the chair from the bed unassisted.

I am getting excited to go back down & see him. I can't wait to see how well his chin looks!!

We also wanted to Thank All of you that have helped us in so many ways! We have been truly Blessed by the genuine LOVE we have felt from so many people! Thank You!!

On a foot note, some have asked about posting comments. Just click on the word Comments at the end of the post for that day & then there will be a box to type in whatever you'd like to say. I usually post them as anonymous & then just sign my name...I hope that helps!!

Visited with friends

Talked to Caleb a few times today. He was pretty tired each time. He said that Allsion Casey & her roommates came to visit. When we talked to him tonight he was playing dominoes with Grandma & Grandpa. He thought Grandpa was winning........ Grandma is heading home tomorrow, I believe. Todd & I are heading out EARLY Thursday morning with the intention of staying until he comes home, to NE.

He thinks he'll have another surgery toward the beginning of the week so please pray with us, that things look GREAT!

I pray that the Lord holds each of you close under his wing as he has done for Caleb.

Love,
Tami

2-3 more surgeries

Hi!

I am disappointed as I write this. Dr. Summitt told Caleb & Grandparents that Caleb will need 2-3 more surgeries for his leg. He won't close it up until he's sure it's ready, which is what we want, but that could keep him from being in NE by Thanksgiving...........he's been having a surgery a week since the crisis is over.

So, I am asking for prayer that God would grant Caleb incredible healing to be in NE by then. I feel selfish asking for that, God has done so much already, but it's still my request......so to all who are praying out there, we are asking God to work another miracle.

Thank you again for all support we've been given.....we love you all........

Love,
Tami

Forgotten info

I realized sometime this afternoon that I forgot to mention a few things this morning. Caleb got the dressing taken off his chin yesterday. Grandma said it looked marvelous!!! He also got one of the tubes from his back taken out. That's where they got the muscle for his flap surgery on his shoulder. He can use the slide board to get to his chair.

He's been very tired the last few times I've talked to him. So I don't know a whole lot more.

Thank you all for the many, many prayers!!!!

Love,
Tami

Breakfast was getting cold

Good mornin' I got a little busy at work & realized that I forgot to post. This morning when I called Caleb, he said he thought he was getting a cavity.....Bummer.....and then he said he needed to let me go because breakfast was getting cold!!! Must be feeling better!!! Not much else to report on.

Thanks again for all the thoughts, cards, prayers, and everything else offered up on our behalf!!

Real Food

Todd talked to Caleb over lunch & he was VERY excited. He was able to eat some real food, so they were bringing on the Chicken Nuggets!!!

He sounded good when I talked to him over my lunch too. Please continue to pray that his left leg heals exceptionally well.

He was getting ready to teach Grandma how to use the computer. He was confident that she'd be able to pick it up. I am so glad he is having this time with his grandparents. I know that being able to get to know my Grandma Goodwater on a deeper level has been such a Blessing!!

I am getting excited to go back to TN to see him. This next week won't go fast enough. Hours are getting cut back at Nucor & so Todd needs to stay to work Mon-Wed & then we will take off for TN after that. Thank you for all your prayers. They mean a lot to all of us!!

Love,
Tami

Chillin'

I have talked to Caleb this morning. We didn't get to talk too long. I am at work & things can get pretty busy in here, but he said things were going good.

I wanted to thank the Meadow's for their soup fundraiser & also Wyld Life for their bowling fundraiser. We can never thank people enough for all they have/& are doing for us. It is exciting to watch God move in so many ways & through so many people.

THANK YOU!!!!

Tami

Out of surgery

Grandma called & Caleb is out of surgery. They were able to close the chin, but not the left leg completely. Dr. Summitt is optomistic that he will be able to keep the left knee though.

It's crazy busy here at work, I don't have time to go into more. THANK YOU for your prayers!!! Keep praying about the knee though........

Love,
Tami

9:30ish

I just talked to Caleb. Grandma & Grandpa are there!!! Praise the Lord. It makes me feel soooo much better having them there. Thank you Bob & Bonna!!!

Surgery is suppose to be 9:30ish. Please pray that everything looks good. Caleb said last night, "Mom, this could be my last surgery." Wouldn't that be wonderful!!!

Mom's prayer is to bring him to NE by Nov 24 to get him situated wherever he is. And then celebrate Thanksgiving together. Todd & I have made arrangements at work to be gone through Thanksgiving.

Of course, if he can come to NE sooner, we'll take it, but that's what we are thinking at this time.

THANK YOU!! To everyone who has done so much for all of our family. We so appreciate it!!

Surgery Tomorrow

Caleb just talked with Dr. Summitt. He is going to have surgery tomorrow after all, to work on his left leg & chin. Please keep this in prayer as I don't know what time surgery will be and I am praying that grandma & grandpa can be there ASAP .........

Thanks for the prayers..........this is not easy on mom being here.......

Answered Prayer!!!

I apologize for not getting this posted earlier, but at 6:15am I got a call from Rani (Caleb's sister), who spent the night with him, that Caleb's digestive system in working!! Who-hoo!!!!

I've talked with Caleb and he sounds good & is very glad to be getting water for now. THANK YOU to all who prayed for relief! He said he was trying to get caught up on email.

Dad & Family left this morning & Grandma & Grandpa should be there sometime tomorrow. We have not been told when the next surgery is scheduled. Please pray that God would hold Caleb under his wing while he is waiting for more family to get there. That he would not "feel" alone. (It's a mom thing, I know)

I'll post more later. Thanks!! Love, Tami

Prayer Request

Caleb is asking for prayer concerning his digestive system. They will run a contrast test to see if they can see any blockages, but until then he cannot eat. He is asking that God would give him patience for not having food.

Thank you!!!

In Christ,
Tami

Still not sure

We are still not sure what is causing Caleb's stomach problems. Tammy said they were going to run another test, but I have not heard any more. Caleb sounds good the couple of times I've talked to him today. As soon as I know more I will post more.

Thank you again for all the support for Caleb's family! It means a lot!!

Love,
Tami

Thanks!

Thanks Jan! Caleb has received a lot of support from many people, but as I am sure you are aware, there are going to be some large expenses. His out-of-pocket for this year is up to $4800 & then in January, there will be another $4800 or so. Then whatever insurance doesn't cover for prosthetics.

I would like to thank everyone who participated in the Applebee's fundraiser. Your support not only financially, but genuine care, was overwhelming. I thank you for everything people from all over the world are doing for my son! It means a lot!

Love,
Tami

Hello everyone,
I have been asked to post this by my mother, Jan Nixon. She is having a soup luncheon at the Meadows on Election Day. In addition to the soup luncheon she will have a free will donation set up designed to help Caleb later on in his recovery. She would love everyone to come over have some soup/pick up soup to go and help Caleb.

Charlie

I've been asked to Post this!

Wyld Life and Young Life presents:(non profit, non denominational christian organization in Norfolk)
Bowling Benefit for Caleb-tues nov 4th 7-9pm$10,
Kings Lanes, Norfolk, NE
1/2 proceeds will go to Caleb's account at Elkhorn Valley Bank

I will check into the angel wings also.....thank you!!!

Better today

I called Caleb this morning & he sounded much better. He said he threw up about 3:00am & that relieved his stomach pains. They believe it's all the narcotics he's on that have slowed down the digestive system. They are also checking to see if there is any blockages. So, for the moment, no food. He is getting nourishment & has been by a feeding tube they keep in him to make sure his body gets the nutrition it needs to keep healing.

I just got off the phone with Tammy & she said Caleb had some friends that were coming to see him from Lee, I believe. Thank you! I know he so enjoys seeing his friends!!

Thank you all for all the prayers that have been lifted up for Caleb. Let's continue to pray for that left leg's healing and that this digestive issue doesn't become a problem. In Christ, Tami

Stomach Pains

I've talked to Caleb this evening & Tammy (step mom). He is having stomach pains. It could be as simple as gas pains, but given our history, it's hard to relax about it. I am doing my best to remember that he is in God's hands whether I am in TN or NE, but it's not been easy. Please pray that his stomach pain would be alieviated. And that mom would be able to get some sleep in spite of it.

He didn't go to Hydro today. Hydro is where they use water to loosen the dressings on his wounds & clean them up and examine them. They just did wound dressing changes in his room today.

If all goes well, we are hoping to have Caleb back in NE by Thanksgiving. We've been told that it's not an unrealistic goal. We are checking into Clarkson in Omaha & Madonna in Lincoln. Transportation could also pose another problem as our insurance company may not cover a plane ride to NE. He may have to wait until he is able to fly commercially.

Sue, Caleb will not be going back to Lee University until August. He is really anxious to get back to his studies. He is a pre-med student wanting to go to the mission field. He had planned to go to South Africa this coming January, but that's of course been tabled for now. I have the same email address that I had before you moved, if you remember it. Otherwise our phone number is available through information. I don't really want to post any of that info on the blog, I hope you understand. It sure has been good to hear from you. I've missed you!

Well, I need to go, but I want to Thank you all for the cards, letters, thoughts & prayers! They mean so much to us. Love, Tami

Missin' Caleb already!

Well, we've made it back to NE & Dad & Family are in TN. We drove through the night & made it home about 7:30am. Todd is still sleeping as he drove 99% of the way. I called Caleb this morning. He said he is enjoying his visit with family. The drugs made it a little difficult for him to stay awake when he's on the phone. So, I didn't get a lot of info from him. I will call later today & see how things looked in Hydro.

His spirits are good though. He's been such a patient, gentle, kind person. He asks eveyone who walks through his door, what their name is & introduces himself & asks how their day is going. He leaves no one out & usually remembers their name from that time forward. Needless to say, he has really become a favorite on the 11th floor Burn Unit!!

Thank you Sue & Mike for the comment. I look forward to making sure Caleb reads it. He does try to stay updated on the blog also & read the comments. Mike, I even have Penn State sweats! (My step daughters live in State College!) Caleb gave me a bad time about that before we left. He said I needed some NE volleyball sweats!

We love all of you & are so amazed at all of God's people that are praying for Caleb! It makes me cry every time I think about it & I am so grateful that you've taken the time to pray for my son!!! Like Todd & I discussed on the way home. How Mary must have felt when they were crucifying Jesus!! I highly recommend The Passion if you haven't seen it! Thank you again! Love, Tami

Things are looking good

Today in Hydro they said things are looking really good. BUT, there is a portion of the flap on the left knee that is not doing so well. There, also is a portion that is doing really well. Please continue to pray that the left knee will heal exceptionally well. Caleb has had a fever the last 2 nights, but it has been breaking by morning. We think it could be coming from his knee, but they are also doing cultures to be sure.

Tues or Wed Dr. Summitt will address his chin & look at his left knee in surgery. In a perfect world this would be Caleb's last surgery.

Caleb got the O.K. to begin working with his left arm. Sam, his OT person gave him exercises to begin working that left forearm, wrist, and hand.

Dad & family are on their way here now & Mom & Todd are getting ready to leave. It is most bittersweet! I love you Caleb!

Love,
Tami (mom)

Doing well

Caleb is doing well. He's been a little drowsy today, but we are managing to keep his pain under control. Thank you Lord! He's getting excited to see his sister, dad, and family. They should be here tomorrow evening sometime.

He just came back from Hydro & things looked GREAT! They've left his shoulder uncovered because it's looking so good. He will only need Bacitracin (neosporin on steriods) on it periodically to keep it from drying out.

We would like to take a minute to Thank all the people who have been working with Caleb here in Nashville for their excellent care. From the Dr's, nurses, lunch personnel, housekeeping personnel, maintainence, care partners & anyone else we may have missed. It has made the hospital experience a much more bearable one. We feel like they truly care. Again THANK YOU!!

Love, Tami

Comments

I just wanted to thank all of you who have posted comments on the blog. I read them regularly. They are a great source of encouragement to me. THANK YOU!!!

When Todd & I go back to NE, Caleb has asked me to continue to post on the blog for him. I will be calling him at least twice a day for updates.

Please pray for me going back to NE. I am ready for a little "home" time, but it will be difficult to leave. I thought it was not easy when he came to TN for college in the first place.........but I have a wonderful husband to help me through that.

Again, thank you for the comments. I so appreciate them.
Love,
Tami
There is not much to really say today. Caleb is doing well. He went to Hydro right before noon. Things looked very good this morning on his wounds. Better than they expected. He is back in his room sleeping at the moment. His spirits have been high & he's even joked about not having feet. We still have many obsticles ahead of us, but we are on the road to recovery.

Again, please pray that he is able to keep that left knee. It will aid him so much in his rehabilitation process. We are also praying that his left shoulder heals well to help him get around during that process.

I am so proud of my son. The choices that he has had to make were not ones that you want your child to have to make, but he has shown so much maturity throughout this. He has been such a testimony to me about clinging to "this is where God has me". I fully expect him to do well in the rehabilitation phase of his life. He is a very hard working young man & I'm sure that will serve him well during this time in his life.

We will never be able to truly express our gratitude to all who have offered up prayers & support on our behalf. THANK YOU!!!

Surgery went well!

Surgery went very well. The right leg was a perfect amputation. The left leg, Dr. Summit put at the same length, and pulled things (muscles) around. He is leaving it "open" for swelling etc, to go down before he would put a skin graft on it. It is still imperative that we pray that his left knee will be workable. The damage on that leg went slightly higher than his knee & you could see some bone during wound care. But for now, Caleb still has both knees.

The burn on the left inside elbow was pretty much healed on it's own, so it didn't require any skin grafting. The chin was not addressed today, but will be at a later date. Please continue to pray for his shoulder to heal as Caleb will need good usage of that shoulder for leg rehab.

Dad & Tammy & kids are coming down this weekend with Mom & Todd going to NE. Grandpa Baber will be relieving them on Tues/Wed. We are thinking he will stay about 10 days, with Todd & I planning to come back after that.

Thank you for all your prayers & support! What a Mighty God we serve!
Love,
Tami

Surgery at Noonish

Caleb is scheduled to go into surgery about noon. Like with the flap surgery, that is subject to delays. We have had a good morning, with lots of Peace. Caleb has been talking to family members most of the morning, which he has really enjoyed.

We are asking for some specific prayer requests though. That there would be good muscle & tissues around the knees with which to build a good support base for him. That the left knee is able to be spared. It will increase his mobility so much. Pray that we are able to firm up some decisions about the next step, i.e. rehabilitation.

Please pray for all the family members that are unable to be here. Pray that they would have peace throughout the procedure. I will be calling family first & then I will post on the blog after surgery.

Again, thank you all for the prayers & support that you have offered for us. It means so very much!

Tuesday is the day

Caleb talked to Dr Summit this morning & told him that he wants to go with prosthetics. Dr Summit got him on the surgery schedule tomorrow. We are pretty sure it's in the afternoon, but we have not been able to confirm that.

We have an appointment tomorrow morning with his case manager to discuss where he will go from here. Please pray for wisdom in that decision also. Caleb still has the burn wound on his shoulder, but will need a little different rehab for his legs.

Dr. Summit is also going to address a few of the superficial burns on his leg, & the inside of his elbow. He will address the legs first & then anything else he has time for. Dr. Summit has promised he will do everything in his power to keep the knee on the left leg. He has had patients with worse burns & was successful at keeping the knee. The burn goes up to the knee on the left leg, but with prayer, we are hoping to keep it.

Caleb was also able to meet Meri Lee. She is the parent of a classmate that has opened her home to us to live while we are here. Caleb was able to personally express his gratitude. We are so thankful that God has provided our housing need through them.

He has also been sleeping & eating well, which will help with continued healing.

Oh,what I would do to have
the kind of faith it takes
To climb out of this boat I'm in
Onto the crashing waves
To step out of my comfort zone
Into the realm of the unknown
Where Jesus is,
And he's holding out his hand
But the waves are calling out my name and they laugh at me
Reminding me of all the times I've tried before and failed
The waves they keep on telling me time and time again
"Boy, you'll never win, you'll never win.
"But the voice of truth tells me a different story
the voice of truth says
"do not be afraid!"
and the voice of truth says
"this is for my glory"
Out of all the voices calling out to me
I will choose to listen and believe the voice of truth
Oh, what I would do to have the kind of strength it takes
To stand before a giant with just a sling and a stone
Surrounded by the sound of a thousand warriors shaking in their armor
Wishing they'd have had the strength to stand
But the giant's calling out my name and he laughs at me
Reminding of all the times I've tried before and failed
The giant keeps on telling me time and time again
"Boy you'll never win, you'll never win."
But the voice of truth tells me a different story
the voice of truth says "do not be afraid!"
and the voice of truth says "this is for my glory"
Out of all the voices calling out to me
I will choose to listen and believe the voice of truth
But the stone was just the right size
to put the giant on the ground
and the waves they don't seem so high
from on top of them looking down
I will soar with the wings of eagles
when I stop and listen to the sound of Jesus
singing over me
But the voice of truth tells me a different story
The voice of truth says do not be afraid
And the voice of truth says this is for my glory
Out of all the voices calling out to me (calling out to me)
I will choose to listen and believe (I will choose to listen and believe)
I will choose to listen and believe the voice of truth
I will listen and believe
I will listen and believe
the voice of truth
I will listen and believe 'Cause Jesus you are the voice of truth
And I will listen to you.. oh you are

Slept & Ate well

Caleb had a great night last night. He ate & slept well. He ate all of his breakfast & lunch. He gave Todd & I the grand tour of the Children's Hospital today. It's been a relaxing day. Until we came back to the room. Then there were just a lot of little things to take care of. For example wound care, eat supper, a few phone calls that Caleb wanted to be able to really concentrate on, etc. Caleb was getting frustrated, but we worked through it. He continues to have great peace about his decision.

We thank you all for your support! I have been meditating on the song by Casting Crowns "The Voice of Truth". It has been ministering to my heart!! Have a GREAT evening!!

Love, Tami

The Decision

After much discussion with several Dr's about Caleb's options with his legs/feet & what kind of mobility he can expect to have with what muscles, tendons & nerves that he has left, Caleb has made the decision today to have both legs amputated below the knee.

Dr Summit brought up the possiblity of amputation with him yesterday. Caleb cried for about 20 seconds & then God gave him great peace about this.

The surgery will take place as early as next week. This will change the focus of Caleb's rehab. He will no longer be needing a burn specialty place, but amputation rehab. We have not explored all the options yet, but we will begin that process fairly quickly.

Please pray for the decisions concerning the rehab process. We thank you all again for all your amazing thoughts, prayers, & support through this. God has been so good to us throughout this entire month. Caleb & I reread Psalm 30. And we love you all & thank you so VERY much!!!

Love, Tami & Caleb
Well, I got to spend the night with Caleb. There is a lot of commotion that goes on in the hospital room, so I took a small nap this am also. Caleb is currently in hydro. That's where they clean up his wounds. I've learned that nothing goes very quickly here. He should be back any minute. Other than that, things are O.K. Please keep the decisions needed in your prayers. I am asking for God's Wisdom & Peace concerning all decisions that are made. When Caleb has made decisions, I will let you know what the next step will be for him. Thank you! Love, Tami

Back to "His" Room

I just realized that I forgot to post this earlier in the day. Caleb is back into the room that is posted on the blog. He is settling in & getting comfortable. Please continue to pray for God's Wisdom & Guidance concerning all decisions, and care that are in Caleb future. He is an incredible young man & I am very proud of him!
Love, Tami

Moving Day!!!

I just got a phone call from Caleb & they are moving him back to room 18 & I can go up & help, so this is REALLY short!!! I just wanted to pass along that info!! Love, Tami

Much gratitude!

I've just spent the last hour and a half making sure I had recorded all the cards that Caleb has received. There are soooooo many!! Thank You!!! He loves getting his mail everyday & mom is doing her best to record them in an address book so he can keep track.

Amy Cornic, it was sooooo good to hear from you......I will be sure to tell Caleb we've heard from you when I go up for the 1:00 visit. He'll be checking online when he gets moved to another step down room.....should be today or tonight. As soon as I know what his new room number will be I will post it online.

I have a request from Caleb, his phone died & he got a new one. He was able to salvage his music, BUT he lost phone numbers. So he is asking that if he had your phone number in the past, if you would text it to him, he will then put them in his phone as he has time. He would really appreciate it!

He's looking really well this morning & STARVING!!!! Kaitlyn Mizner, he said he'd like steak, mashed potatoes, & buttered corn when he comes back to Norfolk!!!!

Again, thank you so much for all the thoughts, prayers, cards, etc.........We love you all!!

Love,
Tami

Doing Well

Caleb came out of surgery 30 minutes ago & things went really well according to the Dr. He is on his way back to his room, so I am headed up there to see him. Please be in prayer that the transplant would be successful. There is always a possibility that the transplanted muscles won't make it, so please keep that in prayer! He's had a long & day & so have I, so this will be short!! I'm gonna go see my kid! Love, Tami

Gift of his Word

Psalm 30

1: I will extol thee, O LORD; for thou hast lifted me up, and hast not made my foes to rejoice over me. 2: O LORD my God, I cried unto thee, and thou hast healed me. 3: O LORD, thou hast brought up my soul from the grave: thou hast kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit. 4: Sing unto the LORD, O ye saints of his, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness. 5: For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. 6: And in my prosperity I said, I shall never be moved. 7: LORD, by thy favour thou hast made my mountain to stand strong: thou didst hide thy face, and I was troubled. 8: I cried to thee, O LORD; and unto the LORD I made supplication. 9: What profit is there in my blood, when I go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise thee? shall it declare thy truth? 10: Hear, O LORD, and have mercy upon me: LORD, be thou my helper. 11: Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing: thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness; 12: To the end that my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks unto thee for ever

I just felt led to share that with you while I'm waiting!!! Love, Tami

Patience is a Virtue!!

I've been passing the time in the main lobby & decided to check on Caleb's status on the board. (For most of you, the board is a TV screen where they list the patient name & their status. i.e. in OR, or in Recovery) Well, his name was not on the board, so I had to do some tracking down. He is actually in an OR in the Vanderbuilt Clinic, and he had just gone into surgery. Sooooo, things will be delayed as far as an update. They are estimating that he will be in there until 6:15 or so. I have moved to the new waiting area & will stick close by. I just wanted to pass along that information for those of you who might be checking the blog for an update. I was able to hang out in Caleb's room from 12:00-1:00 when they took him to surgery. We were able to say a prayer together & then he slept most of the time. Thank you for your continued prayers! Love, Tami

I just wanted to send a quick update. Caleb is having his flap surgery tomorrow at about 1:00. I don’t really know much more than that. We have not been able to speak to the Dr about how his bones look as of right now. After that, we are really just waiting to see where Caleb is at with this process.
Love, Tami
Uncle Josh & Aunt Kristie went home today. They were able to spend the entire 9:00 visit with Caleb & I stayed back at the apartment & dusted & vacuumed.......who-hoo! It was in need of cleaning. So it worked out well for everyone.

The last we've been told anything he is scheuled to have the flap surgery tomorrow at 7:30am. I will post after surgery as soon as I get the family members called. Please keep this surgery in prayer. They will be moving the Latt muscles to cover the armpit. I am hoping to have some information concerning the legs also tomorrow. Caleb said he is scheduled to get his MRI done at 2:45 today. We are continuing to pray that things are looking good.

We have come to the place, that no matter what the circumstances, we are just praying for God's perfect will. It's so easy to want specific things to happen, but as God so clearly showed last week when the flap surgery didn't happen, that He knows best......He knows all the little workings in Caleb's body & the future & we are at Peace with knowing he is so in control.

It is such a beautiful day out today. I pray that you all are able to enjoy it, (even if it's not so nice up at home!) We love you all & thank you again for demonstating God's love toward us!

Love,
Tami

Beautiful Worship

Yesterday I asked Caleb if he would like me to read to him from the devotional that his roommate's mom gave me..........Today being Sunday & all. He wanted me to have Zach & Charlie "put something together". Zach got permission to bring his guitar in they were able to have their own personal worship with the Lord. I wasn't even in the room & when the two guys came out with tears streaming down their faces, I knew it was good!!!! They sang "Come Thou Fount" before they left the room.

I am so grateful that God has put such wonderful young men in my son's life. They are truly brothers in the Lord! We are all so grateful to each of you for your support through this "joy" in our lives.......I'm learning to say that thanks to Caleb......It is such a joy to watch God provide in so many areas & in such different ways in all of our lives. THANK YOU!!!

Love, Tami

THANK YOU

Caleb & his family want to take a moment to thank all of you who participated in the Applebee's fundraiser. Your awesome show of support makes us weep with gratitude.........What a Mighty God we Serve!!!!!

Kinda Tired

Well, today has been uneventful. Caleb is tired the last time I visited. I usually tell him to go ahead & sleep when I'm in there. Todd & Levi flew home this morning. Todd had to fly out at 6:15, so it was an early morning for me too. I was able to go to the garage & get a little over an hour nap. It seems to have helped. I feel a little better.

I am asking for continued prayer for Caleb's family in general. It is taking an emotional toll of several family members & they are feeling the burden. I've encouraged those to call & talk to Caleb. He has been such an inspiration to me. Calling is a little more difficult with him in ICU someone must be in the room to answer the call. But he is at such peace.

I will write more if more goes on, but otherwise, the plan is to do the flap surgery on Tuesday. I do have a correction though......I thought it was the Trap muscle they were going to use, but it is the Latissimis Dorsi. I might not have spelled it correctly, but I did learn about it in 7th grade Health class!!!!

Sometime in the next couple of days, we should get word as to whether or not the leg bones are still alive.

Please pray for the decisions that will come with that information.

Thanks,
Love Tami

Please still keep Praying

Caleb is looking good today. They are keeping him in ICU until they can do the flap surgery on Tuesday. They took the wound vac off & just have a wet pack on his shoulder. I know he is disappointed to be back there. He so enjoyed having his quieter room & visitation from 9am - 9pm. Being back in ICU means that he is back to limited visitation. Please pray that God will continue to minister to him while he's alone. Also, he has ran a fever through the night. Please pray that it would come under control as they are monitering it & the antibiotics, etc. Todd & Levi will be flying home tomorrow, which is very difficult on them both. Please pray that God would give them peace. I think Josh & Kristie are here until Mon. Zach & Charlie are also here for fall break, but I don't know when they are leaving. The love that we have felt from friends & family is amazing!! Thank You ALL!!!!!! Love, Tami

Caleb is coherant

Caleb is coherant & able to write on paper to communicate. They are planning to take out the breathing tube later today. His color looks good. Thank you all for the incredible turnout we've been hearing about at Applebee's.........I know that we have felt SOOOO loved from everyone through this............., as Caleb would say, this joy!!!!

Love,
Tami

A Scare & more praise

We got quite a scare last night. We received a call from Levi about midnight telling us that Caleb was bleeding from his shoulder. He didn’t really know much more at that time, but what had happened was a section in Caleb’s artery in his shoulder/bicep area had disintegrated & he was rushed in for emergency surgery. They took a vein from his left thigh area & spliced it in to the damaged area, & repaired a small hole a little further down. He is back in ICU for the time. We were able to go in & visit him at about 4:00am. He still had the breathing tube, but was able to respond to us.
My gosh, the God things never cease to amaze us……………first off Caleb shouldn’t be here once again. God woke him up & he was able to tell Levi, who “just happened” to be spending the night with him, that he was bleeding. Caleb would have not been able to call for help, it happened so quickly, but his little brother was right there to call for help.
If they had been able to do the shoulder flap the other day, we might not have found the cause of the bleeding in time.
God is so not finished with this young man. It has been comforting to feel His loving arms around us through each “bump”.
Todd (step-dad) was planning to fly back to NE today, but was able to change his flight to Sat. So I have the privilege of his company for a few more days!
We give God our Heavenly Father so much thanks for again watching over our loved one! Thank You Lord!!! What a Mighty God we serve!! Love, Tami

Uncle Josh & Aunt Kristie from WA have arrived. Caleb has been able to spend a little time with them & he showed off his walking to them. Today he was able to walk about 30 feet. Walking was a little more difficult, but he still was able to walk under he own power. He wanted to walk further, but needed to go have a test ran.

He's currently got a fever, so please pray that if it's important the cause will show up. They are doing cultures, etc to find out why, and so far, so good.

We thank everyone for all they have been doing to help us through this joy. Caleb has been an inspiration to me today. He is content that this is where God has him right now.

On behalf of Caleb's entire family, we thank everyone for going to Applebee's today to help with the fundraiser.
Love,
Tami

A Little Disappointment

Dr Summit called, they were unable to do the flap today. They had to remove more dead tissue on the right foot & shoulder, & I believe the left calf. They were able to close up the left forearm. There is more concern about how much mobility he will have in the right foot. They will have an orthopedic person look at the right foot to help determine how much movement he will end up with. Please continue to pray for his extremities.

The Dr felt that we were able to make some forward progress by closing up the left forearm & they will try the flap replacement again next week.

I am reminding myself of the song God gave me through this process........"While I'm waiting"...... and I am begging for patience & trust.....

Thank you all so much for all your thoughts, prayers & support! God is so good! We have felt His love in so many ways these past few weeks......Thank You!

Love,
Tami (mom)

Training has begun

Caleb was given a list of exercises to work on 3-4 times a day & then he doubled the distance he walked. His Occupational Therapy "boss" Sam informed him that he is able to get up & sit in the wheel chair anytime he likes, he doesn't have to have her in the room.

He is looking forward to being able to meet with the kids that were with him on the hike. They haven't been able to connect yet, so today will be quite a day.

Thank you for all your support & prayers!

Great day!!

We had another great day............Caleb got all cleaned up & was told that he looked like Matthew McConaughey.........Then he walked about 180 feet and we went outside for a little while. He's been sleeping much better in this new room & they've adjusted his med's so they are not interupting him so much at night.

Have a good night!! Love, Caleb

Able to Eat!!!!

I asked Caleb what he would like me to post on the blog & he said, "That I am starting to eat". We have a lot going on at the moment & I'll post more later! Love, Caleb

Tuesday's Surgery - Rebuilding Begins!!

Today Caleb got to meet Dr Summit, his plastic surgeon. He wants to start the rebuilding on Tuesday. He's mentioned pulling the Trap muscle up over the shoulder area. He wants to look at the chin & forearm, also. (I didn't realize there was still more on the forearm.) They have not done the shark cartildge on the foot yet either. He said he wants to stay above the waist on Tuesday.

Today was a day of walking 36 feet, not too shabby!! Going for another wheel chair ride outside. The breeze felt so good. Caleb & I & Todd also read some of his mail.......we can't believe how many cards he's received!! Thank You all!! Then he used the laptop the school has let me use to get on facebook & check his email.....thanks Shelley for the emails.....he really appreciates them!!

We talked to one of his nurses tonight. She said when he came in, those first 2 days, he was really not expected to live........now to see him walking down the hall today......what a miracle!!!!!!

Caleb has been so gracious to everyone who is working with him & quickly becoming a "favorite" patient!! As mom, it's encouraging to see that after getting through the teen years!!

I know that all of his family hope & pray that if you do not know the Lord as your personal savior, that through this experience, you will come to know the Lord! And if you do know the Lord, that your faith will increase through this experience. I know that I am learning more about God's Grace through this, than I ever thought possible.

A note from Caleb

I hope I don't sound generic or ungenuine, but in all of this I still know that God must increase and I must decrease in the hearts of everyone who has so compassionately poured out all their love to me. I will eternally be grateful to each and every family member, friend, teacher, acquanitance, and even to those whom I've never met, who have poured themselves out in love for my sake. I guess that what I'm trying to say is thank you all from the bottom of my heart and I hope you find Christ in a deeper way through all of this. - caleb
A quick update.....C aleb was moved yesterday after surgery to a Step-down room.....woo-hoo!!! He is now in Room 11218.....if Zach or Charlie could change that on the website that would be great!!!

The debridement went well yesterday things are looking ready for reconstruction. Caleb's surgeon was in this morning & decided that Tuesday is looking like the day for starting that. He told Caleb he would like to work from the waist up.

I am closing this post, because I am going to post a personalized note from Caleb........

Love,
Tami

Eric,  get ahold of Charlie, Zach, or Levi to get the number for Caleb........he'd love to hear from you too!!!  Maybe tonight or tomorrow with surgery going on this afternoon!!!  :)
Great day yesterday!  We made it to Nashville after driving through the night & when we came to town we were able to go in and see Caleb at 1:00.  Levi flew in on Wed evening to spend fall break with his brother.  He was able to spend the morning with Caleb.  They went for a couple of rides in the wheel chair......and they were able to go outside.

And then.......CALEB WALKED  almost to the nurses station!!!  He held the nurses hands for support. Levi was the witness........We spent a couple hours with Caleb & were able to go outside also.  We got a picture with Mom.

They tried to hook up the internet in his room through his T.V.  There are a few snags that need to be worked out, but I hope that works well for him.  We were able to show him this website.  We didn't have time to really read much, but he was very interested in reading the blogs & comments.  So if there is anything you want to say to Caleb, he will be checking this site out in the next few days.

He/we Thank you for the upcoming fund raiser at Applebee's.  He's very touched by all the generosity we have experienced!  We thank you from the bottom of our heart!

Today he will have more possible tissue removal.  I haven't heard about reconstruction today, although it's not out of the question.  He will be going in for surgery around 12:00.  I will post after the necessary phones when he is done.

God is moving in incredible ways through this entire situation & we are all so Blessed to be included in the Blessing!!
Love,
Tami (mom)

Marc called & they had to give Caleb a colostomy during surgery today. I really don't have much more information. I did a quick review on the internet & this will allow his colon to "rest" ....... Todd & I will be taking off in the next 12-24 hours. If I have time , I will write more later! Thanks so much for all the prayers!!!!
Tami
A Bump in the road.......

I got a call from Marc this morning, & Caleb's colon/large intestine is leaking......instead of doing whatever was planned for surgery today, they are planning to work on this problem. Please be in prayer concerning this.......I will update as soon as possible after surgery. He is first on the list for surgery........

I am reminding myself that God is still in control, and I am clinging to Him. Thank you!

Tami

Good Morning!

Marc said that Caleb is doing well. He is expected to have surgery tomorrow for more debridement. We have not been told that they will work on recontruction, maybe his chin, but I don't think Marc has talked to the Dr's yet today. If I hear more, I will post more.

Please pray for wisdom concerning the rehabilitation process. Because of the extent of Caleb's burns, it is vital that he get excellent rehabilitation. The results will have lifelong consequences.

Again, it's a busy day trying to train someone so Todd & I can go back to TN on Thursday.

God Bless! I am so awed watching God move in this journey!!!

Thank you!!
Love,Tami

Monday, October 6, 2008

Greetings!

I spoke to Marc the this morning to get an update. Caleb was pretty "with it" most of the day yesterday. And today Caleb is a little cranky it seems. In the scope of things, it sure seems minor, but please pray that God will give him a gentler spirit.

It looks like Marc & Bob (grandpa) will be heading to NE sometime on Thursday, & I will be heading back to Nashville to be there on Friday. We'll try to coordinate as best as we can.

This is going to be short as I am back at work & as you can imagine, there is LOTS to get caught up on & then training someone to fill my shoes. I'll talk to you all tomorrow!

Love,
Tami

Sunday, October 5, 2008

Well, I am back in NE & we had a safe journey. Thank you to my brother & his wife for the ride home! It is with such mixed emotions that I am here. Caleb's dad & grandpa will be staying with him until another family member is able to go. For the moment I need to take a respite to keep the balance in my life, because this is going to be a very long process. The mom in me wants to be there for every visit, but I remind myself that Caleb is in God's hands ALWAYS.

I spoke with Marc this morning & Caleb was able to get some sleep last night (thank you Lord) which led to a more "normal" Caleb at the visit today. That could change by the 1:00 visit. I remind myself that he is heavily medicated for pain, and he will not be himself, really, for quite awhile.

He is experiencing a low grade fever that they are trying to determine the cause of. So far the cultures haven't shown anything. Please keep the threat of infection in prayer.

I would like to take a moment to thank all of you for the support that has been given. WOW! God is so good to provide such an amazing support base to help us all through this, whatever our role is. Whether it be family that is with Caleb is person, family & friends that are with Caleb in prayer, Todd & Tammy for holding down the homefront, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Grandparents, all of Caleb's wonderful friends, the people that really didn't know him but have been touched by this situation & led to send a card, the support through our respective jobs through this trial, all the churches that have him on their prayer lists, I am hoping that I haven't forgotten others & if I have, please forgive me, but I/we THANK YOU all so much!

God will get the Glory through this. That is my utmost prayer!

I will be calling to get an update every morning & will post it as soon as I am able.

Love,
Tami (mom)
p.s. When I ask Caleb to smile for me, he flashes the most beautiful smile!!

Weekend Brief

Tonight is going to be short: 1) because there is not so much that is happening for Caleb today and 2) someone has to watch the Husker game for him:). But seriously, this weekend is again predominantly a time for him to rest and for his body to recuperate from surgery and prepare for up coming operations. Caleb has been slightly combative and restless, largely because of the medication which he is taking; obviously, not conducive to good sleep. Continue to pray that Caleb would be able to be alert when he is awake and that God would give clarity to the doctors and family on how to proceed with the medical decisions. Also, pray against the constant threat of fever and infections. This is probably all for the weekend but if their is anything new that arises I'll let you know. If you didn't hear about what happened after Caleb's surgery on Friday just check several posts before this one. Have a great rest of the weekend. God bless

Friday, October 3, 2008

I just reread Zach's blog & realized it's a draft, he should be publishing it soon. It will have more info. Please just continue to pray.........Caleb is strong & healthy & God has saved his life for a reason!!!! We CANNOT forgot that!!!!!!!!
Well, I just noticed that Zach has updated you all ............I guess that about sums things up.
Although today they closed up the fasciotomies (sp) on the right leg, the inside of the left leg & the left forearm. They left the right foot, the left calf, the shoulder & the chin for possibly next Wed.

I will try to write more later.......it's just not a very easy time at the moment, but I tried to get here as quickly as I could because I knew people were waiting. Sorry it took so long!

Tami (mom)

The Next Mile

Hey everyone,

I talked to the family again today after the surgery. The doctors are really uncertain how usable Caleb's left leg will be. Because of the nature of burn wounds, the physicians have to keep removing tissue that is dying and there is a critical point where even if the leg survives, so much of the muscle will have been removed the leg won't be useful. This brings up many questions: do we keep the leg and see how well it funtions; should we consider prosthetics etc. If they do try and keep the leg there are numerous, complicated surgeries that would be necessary, some of which even if they work require removing tissue from other parts of the body. There is enough damage to his right foot as well that the doctors don't believe he will have total functioning capacity either. The medical staff is looking to do more surgery next wednesday, potentially on Caleb's chin and neck
Though Caleb initially talked clearly to his family, he doensn't remember the accident right now and is confused about where he is and what is happening. This is difficult for two reasons: 1) we want to be able to talk to Caleb and know how he is doing but 2) it also makes the decision making process very stressful.
Caleb is not really clear enough mentally because of the medication to make these decisions. A deep request from Caleb's parents is how to approach this. Let's pray that God gives Caleb the ability to think clearly and know how he is supposed to proceed confidently from this point. Being as Caleb is 20, his parents don't want to make decisions for him that will significantly impact the rest of his life without his agreement. We can only imagine the weight of that.
The family, though thankful for where Caleb is now, is very tired and truly needs strength in this time. It is really critial that we pray for them because if they are exhausted, frustrated, or just overwhelmed with the situation, it has a huge impact on Caleb. So please continue to pray specifially for Marc Baber, Tami Tucker, and Bob Baber as they are down there. We really need to come alongside in this time.
Also, as we want Caleb to wake up and be cognisant and alert, pray that when he does God would keep his heart from bitterness or anger. These kind situations are life-altering. Ask that the Lord would make himself so real to Caleb and aware of his Love that resentment and anger would not have an entrance into his heart.

One day at a time

bah....

hey friends

Good Morning!

Thursday, October 2, 2008

It's later than normal & I apologize. At the 9:00 visit the Dr's let us know that they were about to take him in to look at his wounds & assess things & they wanted to talk to us after that, so I've/we've been hanging around the waiting room.

They've decided to have another surgery tomorrow. They are going to try a new technology with shark cartilage on his right foot. It may or may not work, but it will give a base for new tissue growth. They would like to put a wound vac on his left calf, more dead tissue removal on his left bicep/shoulder area and they needed to confer with the plastic surgeon about the chin.

Please be in prayer that this new technology will work. They feel that it's their best shot & with prayer I am confident that it will work. He is still having fevers periodically so pray that it continues to NOT be infections. He is also really "out of it" in many ways.

I need to get going to spend some time with my brother & his wife, so I will update if I learn anything new.......thank you so much for all the prayers & support......God is so Good....he's been carrying me when I've needed him to & he's provided my Best Friend!! Thanks!!!
Love,
Tami (mom)
It's been pointed out to me that people would like to know where other people are. A lot of Marc's family was here last week.

Uncle Josh & Aunt Kristie flew in from WA, they had to return on Sat. Brother Levi drove with Dad & flew home on Sat. Sister Rani drove with Dad & flew home on Sat. Grandma Bonna, Uncle Jim & Aunt Kristin flew in last week & flew home on Sun. Step Dad Todd & Step Mom Tammy flew home on Tuesday. I know that it was so very difficult for them to leave during this time & we all appreciated all that you've done as family!! THANK YOU!!

My cousin Darrin & Missi & kids from the area stopped when they were driving through, yesterday. My brother Scott & his wife Theresa & their daughter Hannah are here now & will be giving me a ride back to NE.

I am getting ready to go see Caleb, so I will close for now & give you an update after I see him.

Thank you ALL for the cards, letters, phone calls, etc I know that for (step dad) Todd & (step mom) Tammy being at home has been difficult, but I want you to know that we love you both!! Thank you!!!

I'll write more soon!
